Start with the operating model

Free Zone company formation

A Dubai free zone company can be fully foreign-owned and is licensed by its chosen free zone authority. The right zone depends on the permitted activity, customer location, facility and visa needs, banking profile, and whether the business must trade directly on the UAE mainland.

What your first plan should confirm

  • 01Exact licensed activity and legal form
  • 02Shareholders, manager, and beneficial owners
  • 03Office, visa, and banking requirements
  • 04One-off fees, annual costs, and compliance

Structure fit

When a Dubai free zone company makes sense

A free zone is a licensing jurisdiction, not a single product. Compare the operating rules before comparing package prices.

  • Most customers are outside the UAE, inside the chosen free zone, or served through an approved mainland route.
  • You run a consultancy, technology, e-commerce, media, logistics, or international trading business.
  • A flexi-desk or serviced office meets your operational and visa needs.
  • The selected zone supports your activity and provides enough substance for banking and tax compliance.

Own 100% of the company without a UAE shareholder.

Choose from licence and facility packages designed for different sectors and operating models.

Trade internationally and within the free zone under the approved activities.

Apply for UAE residence visas when the selected package and facility include an adequate quota.

Cross-border preparation

Setting up from Europe or Russia

Free zone incorporation can often start remotely, but a clean document and banking file matters more than nationality-focused marketing promises.

  • Define the actual customers, countries, currencies, suppliers, and expected transaction values before choosing the zone.
  • Prepare shareholder identification, proof of address, business experience, and evidence of source of funds when requested.
  • Corporate documents issued abroad may need legalisation, certification, and translation before the authority accepts them.
  • Bank KYC and sanctions screening are separate from licensing. No formation agent can guarantee approval or a fixed onboarding time.

Document checklist

Prepare the ownership file before filing

The authority, activity, shareholder type, and country of issue determine the final list. These are the usual starting documents.

Individual shareholders

  • Passport copy for each shareholder and manager
  • Recent proof of residential address
  • Proposed company names and exact activities
  • Business profile or experience evidence when requested

Corporate shareholders

  • Certificate of incorporation and constitutional documents

  • Board resolution approving the free zone company
  • Legalisation and certified translation where required

What it costs

What changes the final setup cost

Free zone packages typically bundle the licence, registration, and a set visa quota, so the total depends on the zone you choose and the facility you take. We break the figures down line by line — no hidden mark-ups on government fees.

  • Free zone, licence type, and number of approved activities
  • Registration, establishment card, and immigration fees
  • Facility level, visa quota, and refundable deposits
  • Shareholder structure, translations, and legalisation
  • Corporate tax, bookkeeping, audit, VAT, and renewal requirements

Common questions

Free Zone Company Formation Dubai FAQs

Which is the best free zone in Dubai? +

There is no best zone for every business. The answer depends on the activity, customer location, office or warehouse needs, visa quota, regulator, banking profile, and annual renewal cost.

Can a Dubai free zone company sell to mainland customers? +

Mainland access is regulated. Depending on the activity and current Dubai rules, the company may need an approved permit, a mainland branch, a distributor, or a separate mainland licence. Confirm the route before signing customer contracts.

Can I form the company without travelling to Dubai? +

Many authorities support remote applications and electronic signatures. Residence visa processing, Emirates ID biometrics, certain signatures, and bank onboarding can still require a visit.

Is a free zone company automatically tax-free? +

No. The 0% corporate tax rate is limited to Qualifying Free Zone Persons and Qualifying Income under the applicable conditions. Other taxable income may be subject to the standard 9% rate.

Can a formation agent guarantee a UAE bank account? +

No. Banks make independent decisions after reviewing ownership, residency, activity, customers, expected transactions, and source of funds. Formation and banking should be planned together, but approval cannot be promised.
